Max from Hastings beats 284 competitors

15 year old Max Richardson from Hastings & St Leonards S.C. finished 5th at the Topper Nationals at Weymouth, August 5th - 11th, from 289 competitors, narrowly missing a podium slot. There were so many young sailors that the entrants had to be split into 3 fleets, with 132 in the Gold fleet
containing the hottest helms. Max raced consistently well in the series, facing a testing mixture of light and strong winds. Weymouth and Portland National Sailing academy is the sailing venue for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Sailing is the most successful Olympic sport in this country, and
Great Britain is the world's top Olympic sailing nation. The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) is the national governing body and trains the Olympic squad, and we hope that Max will be able to join that select team in future.

Ben Slater (Age 15) also made the top group, finishing 14th, and Freddie Connor (Age 14) from Bexhill finished 16th, after coming 3rd in the qualifying series.

The Topper is the most popular single handed sailing dinghy in the country (nearly 50,000 have been built!), and is ideal for young people. Because all the boats are identical, a Topper can race on level terms with any other Topper.

As John Driscoll, an RYA National Sailing Coach, wrote "It is hard to find a sailing school or holiday centre without a fleet of Toppers and here's why: Topper's cutting edge comes from her robustness, her simplicity, versatility and her ease of handling ashore and afloat. She'll take all the knocks of a
sailing day and bounce back smiling. Just like the students! She's taken the fear factor out of capsize drill. She's made it easy to learn and fun to be with"
